The coil is the part that heats your e-liquid, so it decides flavour, vapour and how long a cartridge lasts. Knowing what the numbers on a coil mean, how to tell a worn coil from a setup problem, and which parts fit your device saves money and avoids burnt hits. This guide covers the basics, a troubleshooting table and a compatibility chart for parts available at OVSEG.
What Does the Ohm (Ω) Rating Mean?
The ohm value is the coil's electrical resistance. As a general rule, lower resistance runs at higher wattage and produces more vapour, while higher resistance runs at lower wattage with a tighter draw.
| Resistance | Typical use | Typical e-liquid |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0–1.2Ω | MTL, low power | Nicotine salt |
| 0.6–0.8Ω | MTL / RDL | MTL freebase (or salt, per cartridge guidance) |
| 0.4–0.5Ω | RDL, more vapour | Freebase, lower nicotine |
| 0.15–0.3Ω | DL, high power | DL freebase, low nicotine |
What does "sub-ohm" mean?
Sub-ohm simply means a resistance below 1.0Ω. Strictly speaking, that includes many 0.6–0.8Ω pod cartridges. In everyday use, though, people usually say "sub-ohm" for the much lower-resistance coils (around 0.15–0.4Ω) used in tanks and pod mods for DL vaping at high wattage.
Always follow the wattage range printed on the coil or cartridge. Examples from our range: Vandy Vape M Coil 0.15Ω (Ni80) is rated 50–70W and 0.2Ω (Kanthal A1) 40–60W; Uwell Nunchaku 0.4Ω is rated 45–55W.
Mesh vs Wire Coils
- Mesh coils use a flat mesh strip instead of a round wire. The larger heating surface heats more evenly and is widely used for flavour and vapour. Many current cartridges use mesh, such as the dual mesh OXVA NeXLIM pods.
- Wire coils use a wound wire. They are still common in MTL coils and some cartridges.
- The cotton inside the coil soaks up e-liquid; when it dries out or clogs, flavour suffers regardless of coil type.
Integrated Cartridge vs Replaceable Coil
| Design | What you replace | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated coil cartridge | The whole cartridge | OXVA XLIM V3, OXVA NeXLIM pods, Vaporesso XROS, GeekVape Wenax K1, Tokyo TIKOPOD |
| Empty cartridge + coil | Only the coil | Uwell Caliburn X / Explorer (Caliburn G / G2 coils), VOOPOO PnP X (PnP coils) |
| Tank + coil (mods) | Only the coil | Sub-ohm tanks with mesh coils, e.g. Vandy Vape M Coil |
Troubleshooting: Problems, Causes and What to Check
| Problem | Possible causes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Burnt or harsh taste | Worn coil; dry cotton; wattage too high; e-liquid level too low; chain vaping | Is the cartridge filled above the intake holes? Was it primed? Is the wattage within the printed range? If all are fine, replace the coil or cartridge |
| Flavour getting weaker | Residue build-up on the coil over time | Look for dark residue on the coil; replace if flavour does not return after a refill |
| Gurgling or spitting | Flooded coil; too much e-liquid pulled in; airflow blocked | Blot the mouthpiece and air holes, fire a few short puffs, avoid hard draws on a high-resistance coil |
| E-liquid in the mouth | Flooding or condensation in the chimney | Wipe the mouthpiece and chimney; check that the cartridge is not overfilled |
| Leaking from the base | Worn or misaligned seals; overfilling; cracked cartridge; e-liquid too thin for the coil | Check the seals and fill port plug; refill below the max line; inspect for cracks |
| Device does not fire or "no pod" | Dirty contacts; cartridge not seated; battery empty | Wipe the contacts, reseat the cartridge, charge the device |
Condensation vs Leakage
A few drops in the pod bay or around the air holes are not always a leak. Vapour cools inside the device and turns back into liquid, which collects over time. That is condensation, and it is normal. A real leak looks different.
| Condensation | Leakage | |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | A few drops, builds up slowly | Noticeable e-liquid, cartridge level drops quickly |
| Where | Mouthpiece, air holes, pod bay | Base of the cartridge, around seals or the fill port |
| Cause | Vapour cooling inside the device | Worn seals, overfilling, cracks, pressure changes |
| What to do | Wipe it regularly with a tissue | Check seals, fill level and cartridge condition; replace if cracked |
How to Prime a New Coil or Cartridge
- Fill the cartridge with e-liquid (or put a few drops directly on the cotton of a new replaceable coil).
- Wait a few minutes so the cotton fully absorbs the e-liquid; follow the manufacturer's instructions for the exact time.
- Take a few gentle puffs without firing (on button devices) to help pull e-liquid into the coil.
- Start at the lower end of the recommended wattage and increase gradually.
Coil life depends on how much you vape, the e-liquid and the wattage. Very sweet and heavily cooled e-liquids can build residue faster on some coils.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I change my coil or cartridge?
There is no fixed schedule. Replace it when the flavour fades or tastes burnt, or when the cartridge keeps gurgling or leaking after you have checked the fill level and seals.
What does sub-ohm mean?
Any coil below 1.0Ω. In everyday use the term usually refers to low-resistance coils (around 0.15–0.4Ω) used for DL vaping at higher wattage.
Is liquid in the pod bay always a leak?
No. A few drops near the air holes or mouthpiece are usually condensation. A leak shows as e-liquid around the base or seals and a fast-dropping level.
Are mesh coils better?
Mesh coils heat more evenly and are widely used for flavour and vapour. The right choice depends on your device and preferred draw.
Can I use any coil in my device?
No. Coils and cartridges are made for specific devices or platforms. Check compatibility on the product page.
