MTL (mouth-to-lung) is the most common vaping style on pod systems: you draw vapour into your mouth first, then inhale. It is a tighter, slower draw than direct-to-lung vaping, and MTL e-liquids are formulated for that draw and for the lower power of most pods. This guide explains what makes an e-liquid suitable for MTL, what to check on the label, and which options are available from Egyptian and imported brands at OVSEG.
What Makes an E-Liquid "MTL"?
- VG/PG ratio: many MTL e-liquids use 50VG/50PG. Thinner e-liquids wick quickly into the small coils used in MTL cartridges. This is a common choice, not a strict rule; follow what your cartridge recommends.
- Nicotine strength: MTL freebase usually comes in mid strengths such as 6, 9, 12 or 18mg.
- Device: MTL pods and cartridges, typically around 0.6–1.2Ω. Our XLIM cartridge page, for example, pairs 0.6–0.8Ω with MTL e-liquid and 1.2Ω with salt.
What Should You Check on an MTL E-Liquid Bottle?
| Label item | What it tells you | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Freebase, salt, or DL | "MTL" or a mid-strength freebase for MTL pods; "Salt" for salt e-liquid |
| Nicotine strength | mg per ml (or %) | Mid strengths (6–18mg) for MTL freebase; check it matches the type |
| VG/PG ratio | Thickness of the e-liquid | Around 50/50 is common for MTL; high-VG e-liquids (70/30 and above) are usually labelled for DL |
| Bottle size | Volume | 60ml is common for local MTL lines; some brands use 30ml or 100ml |
| Batch number and warnings | Traceability and safety | A printed batch number and child-safety warnings |
MTL Freebase or Nicotine Salt?
Both are used with an MTL draw. The difference is the form of nicotine and the strength range.
| MTL Freebase | Nicotine Salt | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical strengths | 6–18mg | 20–50mg |
| Throat feel | Can feel stronger on the throat at higher strengths | Formulated to feel smoother at higher strengths |
| Bottle sizes in our range | 30ml, 60ml, 100ml | Usually 30ml |
| Device match | MTL pods, MTL tanks | Low-power pods, 1.0–1.2Ω cartridges |

Tips for a Better MTL Experience
- Prime a new cartridge or coil before the first puff: fill it and wait a few minutes, as the manufacturer recommends.
- Start at the lower end of the wattage range printed on your cartridge.
- Keep the airflow fairly closed for a true MTL draw; opening it fully makes the draw looser and cooler.
- If flavour fades or tastes burnt, it is usually time to replace the cartridge or coil. See the coil and cartridge guide.
- Very sweet and heavily cooled e-liquids can shorten coil life on some cartridges.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does MTL mean in e-liquid?
MTL means mouth-to-lung. MTL e-liquids are made for the tighter draw and lower power of pod systems and MTL devices, often at 50VG/50PG with mid nicotine strengths.
Can I use MTL e-liquid in any pod?
Most pods work with MTL freebase when used with an MTL cartridge (around 0.6–1.2Ω). Check the recommended resistance and wattage for your cartridge.
Is salt e-liquid also MTL?
Salt e-liquids are also used with an MTL draw, but they use nicotine salts at higher strengths and are designed for low-power pods.
Can I use a 70/30 e-liquid in an MTL pod?
High-VG e-liquids are thicker and may wick slowly in small MTL coils, which can cause dry hits. A ratio around 50/50 is the usual choice for MTL cartridges.
